Theorien des Digitalen beziehen ihre Konjunktur aus einer zweideutigen Lage. Zum einen besitzen sie ihre Herkunft in den Visionen und Utopien der gegenkulturellen Aufklärung der 1970er Jahre, aus denen nicht nur der Personal-Computer, sondern auch die Medienwissenschaften und Medientheorien hervorgegangen sind, die den digital disrupture theoretisiert und unter Reflexion gestellt haben und nach deren Diagnose wir vor einer ebenso nachhaltigen Zäsur stehen wie die frühe Neuzeit mit der Erfindung des Buchdrucks. Alle Zeichen und Inhalte bisheriger Kulturen stehen damit auf dem Prüfstand, werden transformiert und von einer Entwicklung überholt, deren weitere Dynamik kaum absehbar ist. Die mit der Digitalisierung verbundene technologische Wende, so die allgemeine Analyse, werde alle Lebensverhältnisse dermaßen verändern und von Grund auf durchschütteln, dass mit Marshall McLuhan und dessen zusammen mit Quentin Fiore verfassten Buch, dessen Titel ironischerweise nicht lautet: The Medium is the Message, sondern The Medium is the Massage, von einer gründlichen ›Massage‹ des gegenwärtigen...

We really need an analysis of algorithmic conditions and their paradoxes and ambiguities that gives them an adequate framework and horizon. But instead we currently seem to be finding an algorithmic solution of the algorithmic, much as digital solutions are being offered for the problems of the digital public sphere, in the way that IT corporations, for example, use exclusively mathematical procedures to evaluate and delete “fake news,” inappropriate portrayals, or the violation of personal rights. This tends to result in a circularity that leaves the drawing of boundaries and raising of barriers solely to programming, instead of restoring them to our ethical conscience and understanding of what the social could mean today. Vom Gefühl und besonders vom Leiden aus ergibt sich kein Weg zur Ethik mitmenschlichen Verhaltens. Die dominierende Gefühlsbetonung im Mitleid verwischt nach Hamburger die Tatsache, dass wir das Leiden des Anderen immer nur im Modus der distanzierten und vermittelten Vorstellung eines Als-Ob erfahren können. Mitleidend leiden wir ohne zu leiden, im Bezug auf das Leiden des Anderen ist nur Teilnahme, nicht aber identifizierende Teilhabe möglich, wie sehr Letzteres auch immer wieder suggeriert werden mag. Hamburger zitiert den Egoismus-Apologeten Max Stirner, man könne zwar nicht die Zahnschmerzen seines Mitmenschen haben, jedoch: »Ihn schmerzt sein Zahn, mich aber schmerzt sein Schmerz.« Man ist versucht, hier an Bill Clintons berühmt-berüchtigtes Bekenntnis zu erinnern, »I feel your pain« (oder Angela Merkels angesichts der leidenden griechischen Bevölkerung »blutendes Herz«). Solche emotionalen Bekundungen können selten ein »Moment des Selbstbezugs«, zugespitzt des narzisstischen Selbstgenusses oder auch Selbstmitleids, verleugnen. Dagegen wird in dem rational verstehenden Bezug der Andere...

Il me semble que le mot « avant-garde » a toujours été pour moi une espèce de souvenir. J’ai dû l’entendre autour de 1960, alors que le surréalisme ne se portait déjà plus très bien. Presque en même temps je découvrais Bataille et Artaud, que n’accompagnait aucune étiquette d’avant-garde. Mais c’est l’ensemble du climat de pensée qui se modifiait de manière profonde dans les après-coups de la guerre.

Les avant-gardes – ou du moins ce nom : il ne s’agit que de son usage – ont eu d’emblée pour moi un goût de passé. D’arrière-garde, en somme. Je ne plaisante pas : je pense que le soupçon porté sur la nature militaire de la métaphore était déjà présent dans le contexte où je découvrais le mot. Pourquoi fallait-il que l’art opère comme une armée ? Il y avait un doute. Ce n’était pas tant l’idée de la lutte ou du combat qui était préoccupante...
